During the Service Week from October 17th to October 20th, the Seventh Grade and four Ninth Grade leaders went on a service trip to local farms including Chestnut Hill Farm, Natick Community Organic Farm, and the Heirloom Harvest Community Farm & CSA to learn about Environmental Sustainability and Stewardship.

On the first day of the Service Trip, October 17th, the Seventh Graders were divided into work groups to go to different Primary and Lower School classrooms and teach 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders about Environmental Stewardship. The Seventh Graders read a book about Environmental Stewardship to Primary and Lower Schoolers and had them actively engaged in class via different activities and skits.

Next day, each work group visited Chestnut Hill Farm, Natick Community Organic Farm, and the Heirloom Harvest Community Farm & CSA.

At the Chestnut Hill Farm, the students helped with farm works such as pulling off stakes and cutting twines to organize the tomato fields after the harvest. They also pulled plastic off of eggplant fields where the harvest was over. At the Natick Community Organic Farm, the students cleaned animal compost and spread manure equally on the fields. At the Heirloom Harvest Community Farm & CSA, students helped with carrying pipes, cleaning the greenhouse, sorting plastic containers, and wood stacking.

After three days of service in the farms, everyone went hiking to Mount Monadnock, New Hampshire for the last day of the trip. Climbing the steep rocks, the Seventh Grade and Ninth Grade Leaders had a wonderful time hiking and strengthened their bond as a group. All 74 students on the hike were able to reach the top of the mountain and safely hike down.

The Seventh Grade Service Trip was a great experience of learning about producing Environment - Friendly and organic crops, and Environmental Sustainability and Stewardship. We were also able to gain new perspectives and provide a positive difference to local farms. It was a great opportunity that taught us to appreciate the meals on our dinner table, by experiencing how much effort and time it takes for the farmers to produce our food.
