Every year, students and parents are interested in new teachers who are starting or continuing their teaching career in Fay School. This year, there are several new teachers who are helping the Fay students make improvements in their subjects. Mr. Dugger is one of the new major music teachers in Fay. Due to his musical skill and experience with different genres of music, he supervises all of the bands and ensembles, and additionally teaches basic musicianship. Curious about this, I decided to interview Mr. Dugger about settling in to Fay.
What's the best part of being a music teacher?
I really enjoy working with the students during the day and hanging out with them in the evenings. It is nice to see their efforts in class, the dining hall, on the field and in the dorm.
What are some challenges that you might face moving forward in this year?
After students go through the beginning band program, which is somewhat small, the ensemble doubles in size with students from all over the world. Each student may have a different teaching of a musical concept. So to get everyone on the same page with rehearsal or conducting techniques may take time.
A lot of students say that the Jazz band has changed in a positive way from the start of the year. What do you teach in Jazz band, and what your plans for the class this year?
I am a lover of all music. I happen to really enjoy the history of jazz music because its origins are from many different countries. Therefore, jazz music was birthed from a global movement. I’m trying to share that story in my teaching. So my students are going to listen to jazz records dating from the earliest sources to today to understand what jazz really is. Along the way we will perform in the many different styles jazz has to offer. As a jazz musician, I am passionate about teaching and playing jazz.
Why did you decide to invest your time in teaching music?
Music is very important to the development of a child. That is precisely why at the earliest stages of learning, songs are used to teach children counting, the alphabet etc. Music has been proven to engage both sides of the brain that for a developing child is very important. Having music everyday is the perfect stretch or warm-up for the brain to engage in all other subjects. So many of our top students are also dedicated musicians. I have heard from them that they would love to have more practice time. I believe Fay can support a rigorous academic program as well as a rigorous arts program.
What are some things in the school that makes you hard to adjust in some way?
I have been very used to longer classes at my previous school. It’s an adjustment for me to teach in 40 minutes. I have to be more planful with my time to maximize instruction.
Is there going to be a concert from the band or orchestra this Fall term?
The advanced band and the string ensemble will perform at the holiday concert.
Lastly, what are the things that you would like to achieve as a music teacher this year?
I would like to personally know every student in my class and see them enjoy creating music with each other. Fay students are very motivated to learn and perform well. It’s amazing to work with students with different musical backgrounds. I’m learning from them how music education works in their cities or countries.
